In Memory of Florence Catherine Brown

Florence Catherine Brown (nee Wurtz) was born in Stromsburg, Nebraska, on September 1, 1904. She was the oldest of the five children of Harry David Wurtz and Lena Mae Randell. She grew up on their farm where corn was the principal crop. She and Francis Lee Brown were married in York, Nebraska, on October 1, 1925. The picture on the upper right was taken at their wedding. Their children comprised five sons (Robert Lee, Donald Eugene, Warren Harry, William Dean, and Jerry Dale) and four daughters (Dorathea Ann, Betty Lou, Florence Catherine, and Deloris May) . She devoted her life to caring for Lee and her nine children. More than once she was heard to say " I've swept up so much dirt in my life that if I'd had a hole to put it in, I know I would own 80 acres by now." They resided in Butte Falls, Oregon, from 1948 on. The photo on the lower right shows them later in their marriage.

Lee passed away in 1964 and Florence followed on January 7, 1973. At the time of her death, Florence was residing with her daughter, Deloris May Hale, in Glendale, Arizona. Like Lee, she was buried in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Medford, Oregon, where the headstone shown below can be viewed.
