Francis Lee Brown was born in Brainard, Nebraska, on September 4, 1897. He was the eighth of the 11 children of James Calvin Brown and Mary Theresa Hopkins.
He and Florence Catherine Wurtz were married in York, Nebraska, on October 1, 1925. The picture on the right was taken at their wedding. Their children comprised five sons (Robert Lee, Donald Eugene, Warren Harry, William Dean, and Jerry Dale) and four daughters (Dorathea Ann, Betty Lou, Florence Catherine, and Deloris May) . During the depression, the family fell on hard times and Francis had to leave the
family to look for work. He finally found farm work in California and sent for the
family. He worked in the Kaiser shipyard in Richmond, CA during WWII. After the
war ended, he moved the family to Butte Falls and worked for Medford Corporation
in the woods until he retired in 1963. Lee and Florence resided in Butte Falls, Oregon, from 1948 until his passing. The picture on the lower right is of him as "Grandpa Brown".
Lee passed away on March 24, 1964, and Florence followed on January 7, 1973. Both he and Florence were buried in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Medford, Oregon, where the headstone shown below can be viewed.
