Circuit Court Legal Actions Books

photo of the Jackson County Courthouse

JCGL volunteers photographed and indexed two circuit court Legal Actions books for the years 1853-1873 and 1858-1861, respectively. The cases recorded include various judgments, indictments for crimes including misdemeanors as well as felonies, divorces and other actions. Most judgments list the parties involved (plaintiff and defendant) and amount of the judgment, but no details as to what the judgment was for. Some of the divorce cases give the names of the children as well as their ages. Many of the criminal cases are followed from plea of the defendant through trial, verdict and sentence. However, details are not included (testimony, etc).

The index also includes the names of those who were chosen to be on the Grand Jury, but not other significant information is given about these men.
